some great ideas for making small living rooms appear larger!
Posted on September 29, 2010 at 01:21:39

not everyone can afford a large house, and if you're just such a person, then you just need to make do with the house that you've got. but that doesn't mean that you can't try and make your rooms appear larger! i found a list of some great techniques for making a smaller living room appear larger. the one tip i like the most is the one about lighting. lighting can really make a difference when it comes to making a smaller room look a whole lot larger than it actually is. now this is something that of course differs depending on the room in question. the placement and size of furniture, paintings and windows can really have a lot of impact on where you can place lights and where you can aim the lights. but with some trial and error i think it's possible to get the lights placed and aimed just right so that the smaller room ends up appearing larger.

a simple home for those with simple needs

a lot of the houses i've looked at recently have been larger houses with four or more bedrooms and lots of other amenities, so i thought it was time to look at smaller houses again. i've found a simple house that i think would be perfect for a person or an older couple with simple needs.

the front door of this house opens into the living room. the living room is rectangular in shape, and the window placement makes me think putting a tv in the corner between the windows would be a good idea. some relaxing chairs could be put in front of the tv, and that would still leave lots of room to access the dining area and the kitchen that are located at the back of the house behind the living room. for a smaller house, i think the kitchen is quite well done. it has a surprising amount of counter space but still has a double basin sink, a stove and a fridge. the kitchen also has a door opening to the back of the house, and near this door there is a closet for the washer and the dryer.

at the front of the house, next to the living room, there is the master bedroom. it has a good sized closet, and long walls along two of the sides that give lots of opportunity for laying out the bed and other furniture. there is another bedroom in the back corner of the house, and it has a closet along one wall. both bedrooms share a bathroom that's located between the smaller bedroom and the closet with the washer and dryer. this bathroom features a sink, a toilet, and a combined tub and shower. just outside the bathroom, near where the kitchen and living room are, there's a small linen closet.

clearly, this is a very simple and minimalistic house. but i think it does the job superbly! i can really see this house being great for an older couple who no longer have the mobility that they had in their youth. the layout of the house makes it easy to get around, and there are no stairs to have to climb. but i think it would be a great house for a single person, too, who doesn't need a lot of space. the second bedroom could even be used as a home office for example, or maybe as a library or a study. regardless, for people with simple needs, this is a simple and efficient house for sure!

look at these skinny but tall fridges!
Posted on September 26, 2010 at 23:08:44

sometimes in small houses we find that space is at a premium, even in very essential rooms like the kitchen. the refrigerator is often one of the largest appliances we find in there, so reducing the footprint of the fridge can save a lot of space. but we don't want to just get a smaller fridge and lose a lot of space for food, either! i think that these fridges that are thin but tall may be just the solution to this sort of a problem! they're clearly not as wide as traditional fridges but they still have lots of space because they're still nice and tall. based on the pictures in that article, i think those fridges still leave lots of room for storing large amounts of food and drink, even enough for a large family!

a marvelous house for the beach
Posted on September 26, 2010 at 23:00:57

many people dream of owning a house on the beach. well if that's your dream, then you should probably start considering plans for houses that can be built on a beach! i've found one marvelous beach house that i think has some real potential.

the bottom level of this house features space that could be used for parking a vehicle. there is also a outdoor shower area located at this level, which is of course a great thing to have when your house is on the beach. it's a very convenient way of getting all of the sand off of you after you come in from a swim, or when you're done playing an intense game of beach volleyball.

going up the stairs brings you to the main level. this is a great level, no doubt! it has a large screened porch and deck that wraps around three sides of this floor. this is a really great feature of the house, because you can put plants here, or you can put out some deck furniture and relax in the warm evenings.

going inside the front door, there's an entry area, and from here we can go into the family room. the family room is very open and it even includes a fireplace! it has a ceiling fan, which of course is very necessary in areas with hot temperatures. at the bck of the house we find that the family room blends into the dining room, and beside the dining room we find the kitchen. the kitchen is shaped like the letter c, and it includes an island in the middle. the kitchen even includes a pantry.

through a door in the dining room, we get to a room with a desk, which i think would be a great place to put a telephone, or maybe it could be used as an author's desk where an author writes poetry and short stories. also in this area we find a washroom with a toilet and a sink, and on the opposite side we find a laundry room. the middle room with the desk also opens onto the screened porch.

going up the stairs, which have their base near the entry, we come to the magnificent upper level. here we find two spacious suites. the largest suite has a marvelous bathroom that includes a shower, a tub, two sinks, an enclosed toilet, and a linen closet in the enclosed toilet room. this suite also has a 9 foot high tray ceiling with a ceiling fan in the middle, along with some shelving in one corner. this suite also features lots of closet space, since it has both his and hers closets. one of the best features is the porch, with its own ceiling fan. this would no doubt be a very relaxing and private place to spend the warm evenings.

the other suite isn't as fancy as the first, but it is still very, very good. it also has a 9 foot tray ceiling with a ceiling fan, and it also features a large walk-in closet that contains an area for linens. it has a bathroom that features two sinks, a shower, a tub and an enclosed toilet.

i think this is a really great house for an older retired couple who live on the beach. this house makes it easy to take advantage of everything that ocean-side living offers, while also having lots of deck and porch space. the bedroom suites are very appealing, and i think it gives a lot of opportunity for an older retired couple to host friends and family in the second suite bedroom. this is surely a house to keep in mind if you're considering building a place on the beach.

a futuristic chair and table
Posted on September 25, 2010 at 21:14:26

when i think of what the future might hold, this futuristic chair and table come to mind. for some reason the shape of the chair makes me think of high technology. maybe it has something to do with the angles that the various parts of the chair meet at, and the fact that it's a metallic chair and it looks like it is made of futuristic materials. the table itself looks almost like its wood colored top is floating on lasers or force fields. together they make a unique pair no doubt about it!
