this is a very sneaky chair!

Posted on October 11, 2010 at 23:45:15

one of my friends just emailed me about this very deceptive chair that looks like it has only one leg! when i first saw the side view i didn't realize immediately how the chair works. but looking at the other view it becomes very clear. i think it's a great idea though and the two different shapes are very unique and interesting. i like these chairs a lot!

a small home that's great for a car enthusiast

Posted on October 11, 2010 at 23:35:56

as a family gets older, the children eventually move out to their own homes, and the parents may no longer need the space they had in the larger house they needed when they had their children living with them. so maybe the parents are now looking for a smaller house, but it turns out that they absolutely love cars! well for an older couple like that, i think this small house with a three-car garage would be a really great option to consider.

like i just mentioned, the lower floor of this house features a three car garage. the floor plan has a note suggesting that a work pit could be created under one of the car spots. this would be a really excellent feature to have for the owner of vintage or sports cars, especially if the owner likes to perform their own repairs or make their own improvements. the garage still leaves lots of room for storing yard tools or car parts, and lots of space for work counters and other equipment that might be useful when working on cars, like air compressors.

above the three-car garage there is a floor that has all of the living essentials. this floor is accessible through a stairway located on the outside of the house. when we first enter the house through the door at the top of these stairs, there's a small entry area that's part of the nook. the nook has room for bookshelves, and it also merges into the living room. in between the living room area and the nook we find a dormer window with a seat. this would be a great area for reading, i think.

towards the back of the house we find the kitchen. it has c-shaped counters and includes a two-basin sink, a cooking range, and a fridge. i think a dining room table could be put in between the living room and the nook, and it would be very easy to bring food to the table from the kitchen that's located so near by.

next to the kitchen, at the back of the house, there's a bathroom. it includes a toilet, a sink, a shower, and even a linen closet. near the bathroom, towards the center of the house, there's a closet where the stacked washer and dryer can be placed.

past the bathroom and the washer/dryer closet, along the side of the house, we find the house's only bedroom. like the living room and the nook, it features a dormer with a seat. it also has a walk-in closet, and one more unique feature of this house is the three skylights along the back wall of the bedroom. i think this is a feature that could be really great. if you put the head of the bed under here, it'd be like you're camping in the great outdoors, but with all of the safety and comfort of being in a house. you could see the stars at night, and in the morning you could be gently woken up by the rays of the sun.

i think this is a really fantastic house for an older couple who really likes cars, even to the point of working on their own vehicles. the three car garage has lots of room for cars and the tools necessary to work on them. then the upstairs level offers everything the couple would need to live comfortably, but manages to put it all within the confines of a smaller house. it's truly remarkable, i think.

a fantastic beach cottage that could even be lived in all year

Posted on October 11, 2010 at 14:52:41

i really like the beach, and i also really like beach houses. their ground floor plans, which often include a lot of open area since the house is supported by pillars, are always delightful. and just about everything else about them makes me think of pleasure and relaxation in the sun. i recently looked at the floor plans of a beach cottage with three levels that i think would be very enjoyable to live in even year-round!

the lower level features lots of open space. there's a covered porch, a long carport along one side, and also an equipment area. there's also an enclosed part of the house, which includes an entry/utility room that includes stairs leading to the upper level, along with space for a washer and dryer. this part of the house also features an ample externally-accessible storage area, which i think would make a great place for storing surfboards and maybe even patio furniture.

going upstairs, we come to the main floor. there's a small foyer at the top of the stairs, which is near a door leading to a long porch located along one entire side of the house. i think this porch is absolutely stunning. this would be a great place to sit and watch the sunset over the ocean, while basking in the warm summer breeze.

back inside, the house, there's a living room with a ceiling that's two stories high. this living room also flows into the dining room, which gives lots of flexibility when it comes to layout out furniture. the kitchen is located next to the dining room, and has space for a refrigerator, a double-basin sink, a range, and it also has lots of counter space. there is even a pantry opening into the dining room.

next to the kitchen we find a bathroom. it includes a bath, a toilet, and a sink with some counter space next to it. although it's not attached to the master bedroom, this is probably the bathroom that the occupants of the master bedroom would use most often. the master bedroom itself is located nearby, and is quite spacious. it has a window overlooking the porch, and at the other end of the room it has a walk-in closet. the walk-in closet even has its own window!

the stairs leading up to the upper level have their base located near the door to the master bedroom. part of the stairs overlooks the open living room, and there's an observation room located at the top of the stairs. i think this room might make a cozy reading area. there's a second bedroom located on this level, as well. it features a walk-in closet, and its own private bathroom that includes a tub, a toilet, and a sink. there's also a door in the bathroom leading to attic space.

this is a beach house that really does offer a lot. it clearly makes it really convenient and easy to make the most out of beach life, with lots of storage space for stuff like surfboards, patio furniture, chairs, beach volleyball nets, and maybe boating and water sports equipment, too. the two-story living room would be very open and would really reflect the freedom and openness of the beach and the ocean. when it comes to the bedrooms, some people may even want to use the upper floor bedroom as the master bedroom, although it is smaller. than the bedroom on the main floor. if it's a family living in the house, maybe the parents could use the smaller upper floor bedroom since it offers more privacy, while their children share the lower floor bedroom since it's larger and could probably have enough room for some bunk beds. regardless it's a very good beach cottage that could even be used as a year-round house.

a colonial-style house good for a family of five or six people

Posted on October 11, 2010 at 14:15:49

with some families having five or six people, it becomes really important to have lots of garage space, lots of living space, and lots of bedroom space. for a family like this, a colonial-style house is often a very good choice. this plan with a 2-car garage and four bedrooms is a good example of what to look for.

the front entrance features a covered porch, which leads into the foyer. in the foyer we find the stairs leading to the upper level, as well as a closet, and a hallway leading to the back of the house. to the left of the lobby there's an entrance to the living room. since there's also a family room behind the living room, the living room could be reserved for fancy occasions. the family's best furniture could be kept in the lavishly decorated living room, so they can entertain important guests in front of the magnificent fireplace.

behind the living room is the family room. if the living room is used for formal occasions, the family room could be used for everyday living. this would be a great area to put a television and furniture for watching tv and movies for instance. the living room also opens to the terrace out back.

the family room also flows into the dinette located at the back of the house, which in turn flows into the kitchen. this obviously makes a great area for a breakfast nook, and the kitchen itself has a bar counter in the dinette area. the kitchen offers lots of counter space, in addition to two sinks, a stove, a fridge, and pantry space. near the pantry there's a short hallway leading to the dining room at the front of the house. this dining room also opens into the foyer, opposite the doorway to the living room.

the hallway between the kitchen and the dining room connects to some other rooms. on one side, it connects to a washroom containing a toilet and a sink. this washroom also has a door connecting to the hallway between the foyer and the dinette. the hallway between the kitchen and the dining room also connects to the mudroom. the mudroom in turn connects to the two-car garage. the garage has a door leading out back, and it also has a storage area towards the front along the side near the house. this is a great place to store lawn equipment or maybe even sports equipment for the kids.

going up the stairs in the foyer brings us to the second story. here we find a small balcony overlooking the foyer, as well as the bedrooms. not including the master bedroom, there are three other bedrooms on this floor. two are at the back of the house, with one at the front. all three bedrooms feature closets, and they share a bathroom at the side of the house, located between two of the bedrooms. this bathroom features a tub, a toilet, and a sink. there is also a small linen closet.

the master suite is along one side of the house. it features a large open bedroom area with windows looking out the front and side of the house. at the back of the house, there's a short hallway leading to the master bathroom. above this hallway is a skylight. on one wide there's a shallow closet with folding doors, and on the opposite side there's a large walk-in closet. at the end of the hallway at the back of the house is the master bathroom. it includes a whirlpool tub, a shower, a toilet, and two sinks with counter space.

this house offers lots of living space between the family room and the living room, and it also has lots of bedroom space, too. i think a family of five or six people could easily live in this house. the two-car garage has lots of room for vehicles, as well. overall it's a well designed house that's practical but still very stylish and true to its roots.

never underestimate the potential of refinished furniture and furnishings!

Posted on October 09, 2010 at 13:10:57

a lot of people think that once a piece of furniture, or even a furnishing like a lamp, gets too old, it's useless and should be thrown out. or when buying a piece of furniture, a lot of people think it has to be something that was just newly manufactured. i want to remind such people about how it's possible to take old and even well-used household items and refinish them into items that look brand new! some good examples of this are the before and after photos of an old lamp that was salvaged and redone to look spectacular, as well as a pine desk that was repainted. those are both really good examples of how old, unspectacular furniture and furnishings that may on their way to the garbage can be saved and turned into items that look almost new again, and can then be used for many more years.
