some of my favorite cabin house plans

Posted on November 20, 2011 at 22:38:06

lately i've been thinking a lot about cabins so i'm going to write about some of the cabin floor plans that i've seen lately and that i've liked the most. now i don't believe that a cabin should be big. that's why it's a cabin! so some of these plans are relatively small and simple so i'm going to talk about several of them in one article.

the first cabin that i'm going to write about is this rectangular cabin with a loft. it's not a complex cabin but i think it's really balanced and it has all of the essentials. at the front of this cabin there's a large porch. this porch would make a great place to sit during the evening. if the cabin is by a lake then this porch could maybe face the lake and it'd be very relaxing to sit there in the evening and look out over the water.

going through the front door leads to the main room of the cabin. since it's almost an open square area it's very flexible with how it's used. a small kitchen area could probably be built using a table and it could have a portable electric stove and maybe a small fridge if those are needed. but if those aren't needed then it could be used as a bedroom or it could be used like a traditional cabin living room area with maybe a bed and a table and some chairs. at the back of the cabin we find a closet and a bathroom.

there's also a sleeping loft up above on the next level. the ladder to get up to the sleeping area is in the main room of the cabin near the back on the wall between the main area and the bathroom. there's a note on the plan saying that there's low headroom in the loft area so if there's not enough space to sleep in then it could also be used for storage.

i think that's a cabin that's simple but it can also be practical and flexible at the same time. the next cabin i want to talk about is unique because it has a great hexagonal shape. this is one of the most unique cabin floor plans that i have seen in a long time!

because of its hexagonal shape the interior layout is very special and the rooms have very interesting shapes. the main entrance to the cabin is near one of the six outer corners of the cabin. it leads in to an entry way with a triangular shaped closet off to one side. this small hallway leads to the main living area of the cabin. i really like the shape of this main living area. it's very unique and i don't even know the words to describe its shape! just look at the floor plan and you'll see what i mean about its shape.

this cabin also has a kitchen area that's connected to the living area. the kitchen also has a very special shape. it's almost like a triangle but it doesn't come to a full point. it looks like there's also some room for a dining area too. because the cabin has a hexagonal shape the area between the kitchen and the living room forms a point. both of these walls look like they could have sliding doors leading to the great pointed wooden deck that comes off of these two sides of the cabin. i really like this deck a lot. it has a great pointed shape too and it looks to me like it offers lots of space and it's easily accessible from both the living area and from the kitchen. this would make it very useful for having bbqs. the food could be prepared in the kitchen and the it could be brought out and bbqed on the deck and then there's lots of room on the deck to sit and eat the great bbq food. when everyone is done eating the living area is right there so everybody could go back in the cabin and have a great time relaxing if that living area is laid out with some chairs and maybe even a sofa.

next to the kitchen along the one side of the cabin there's a bathroom that includes a tub and a toilet and a sink. there's also a closet just outside of the bathroom door. across from this closet there's a bedroom. again because this cabin has a hexagonal shape the bedroom comes to a point. since it shares a wall with the main entrance and there's a closet on the other side it has a very unique shape. the closet is off to the one side and while it's got a mix of a rectangular shape and a triangular shape.

near the middle of the cabin by the hallway leading from the main living area to the bathroom and the bedroom there's a ladder leading up to the loft. this loft area also has a very unique shape similar to that of the bedroom area. it's almost like a pentagon shape i would say. this area could maybe be used for storage or it could be maybe used as another sleeping area or maybe even as a reading nook. off to one side there's a storage area and there's also a utility closet. the other half of the cabin that's above the living area and the kitchen is wide open.

if you look at the floor plan for that cabin you'll see how many unique and special shapes it has. i'm sure that the unique outer shape of the cabin and then the resulting unique room shapes inside would be very visually stunning and would make this cabin one to remember!

the last cabin i want to look at is this 1 story log cabin that has all sorts of amenities. at the front of this log cabin is a small porch and going through this door leads to a vaulted great room. this vaulted great room truly is a great room! it looks like it's wide open and includes lots of space for a living area maybe with some comfortable seating and there's also room for a dining area. since it's one big open area i think that it leaves lots of options available for where to put the furniture.

at the back of the cabin behind the dining area there's a nice large kitchen. this kitchen looks especially great for a log cabin house. it has an island with a stove and it has lots of counter space too. just because it's a cabin doesn't mean that it shouldn't have a good kitchen! eating great meals is often part of the cabin lifestyle so it's very helpful to have such a great kitchen.

there's a hallway that branches off from the back corner of the vaulted great room. part of it leads to the vaulted bedroom that's at the front of the cabin next to the great room. this looks like it would be a very comfortable bedroom. it's almost a square shape and it has a window looking out the front of the cabin and it also has lots of closet space along the wall near the door. going back into the hallway we also find a study room that's behind the vaulted bedroom. i think this room would make a great space for a writer who wants to use the majestic nature scene around the cabin as inspiration but who still needs an area that's warm and quiet for doing their writing. if it's not used as a study it could probably still be used as another bedroom maybe for kids or guests. if it isn't used as a study or as a bedroom then it could also be used like it were a large closet. maybe some camping or hiking gear or some sports equipment could be stored in here when it's not in use.

back in the hallway we can follow it to the rear of the cabin where there is some closet space and also the bathroom. the bathroom has a sink and a toilet and a shower too. just outside the bathroom door in the hallway there's another door leading to the back screened porch. this screened porch has doorways on either side! this could be a relaxing area to sit in during the evening when maybe there are flying bugs outside but it's still very nice weather. this porch is also very convenient because it's so close to the bathroom. if the cabin had its back facing toward a lake then it would be possible to go swimming in the lake and then when done it'd be so easy to get to the bathroom to clean up before starting a bbq maybe on a patio behind the cabin.

this last log cabin just goes to show that cabin life doesn't have to be difficult! it's possible to have a compact cabin that still has many of the amenities expected from a house that's in a city or in the suburbs. i think it's a great cabin for people who might choose to spend all year out by the lake rather than maybe just a few weeks or a month during the summer. it's a cabin that i think would be great to live in all year round!

some more space efficient furniture

Posted on November 20, 2011 at 21:46:26

furniture that's space efficient is always one of my favorite topics. just a few days ago i wrote about a sofa that can convert into a table and a bench. well today i'm going to write about a table and some chairs that are also space efficient.

i think that this table and these chairs are a great idea for a small apartment or even just a small room in a large house. just look how compact they all get when the chairs are pushed completely under the table! they basically become one table at that point. but if you need the chairs because you want to sit down then you just have to pull them out from underneath the table. like that sofa that i mentioned earlier this table and its chairs are just so space efficient.

this chair has a great shape

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 02:58:33

chairs and seating are always one of my favorite furniture topics. of all the chairs i've seen lately this wooden chair is one of the most unique. it has some really great contours and it has got a great shape. this is a chair that's infused with curves and bends. all this roundness really gives it a unique shape and a unique look. it's like it's a chair that would cup you nicely while you sit in it.

a faucet and a rug and a lamp that all look organic to me

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 01:07:09

i always like home furnishings that aren't organic but that still look organic in some way. i've seen a few such furnishings lately that i want to discuss because i think they have some very special properties.

the first one is this curved metallic faucet. although it has a shiny metallic finish i think it looks organic because of its shape. it has curves and bends that are gradual and it has a gentle flow to it. its shape and appearance remind me of two organic things. the first is that it reminds me of a water bird like an ostrich or a duck or a goose. like a goose it has a head with a beak and then a long neck and finally it tapers down to a floating body and then there's a talk in the back. it also reminds me of a snake too. it reminds me of a snake because it has a tubular shape and it looks like a snake that is looking for its prey. because this faucet makes me think of some animals it also makes me think that it has a very natural and organic feeling to it although it's made of metal and it is shiny.

the second furnishing that i think looks organic are these rugs. they remind me of biological pathways like neurons and nerves. the pattern on these rugs really makes me think of scientific pictures i've seen before of the human nervous system. so that's why i think that those rugs are organic because they remind me of organic pictures that i've seen before.

the last furnishing that i want to talk about are these lamps that remind me of a bloom of jellyfish. these lamps come in different shapes so that sometimes the lamp is tall and skinny and other times the lamp is about as tall as it is wide and finally it can also be not very tall at all but it is still very wide. so when i see this it makes me think of many jellyfish swimming together. the last picture in the article really shows what i mean. it has six of the lamps shown in one photo and some of them are at varying heights and widths so that together they look like many happy jellyfish swimming in the ocean.

so i think that when home furnishing looks biological like they're animals or part of the human body it makes me think that they look organic. i like the organic look because it's natural and bringing this natural feeling into a home can make it have a much more natural ambience. this kind of ambience can be just the thing to turn a boring city house into a thriving home.

this sofa that coverts to a table and bench is so space efficient

Posted on November 12, 2011 at 17:47:56

space efficient furniture is one of my favorite topics. people living in small apartments especially in a country like japan need furniture that's small but also efficient and also practical. this sofa is a really good example of furniture like that.

it can be folded so that it's a sofa but then it can be twisted around so that the back of the sofa becomes a table top and the back cushions become part of the seating bench! this is an ingenious design that lets you get at least three pieces of furniture out of just one! you get the table, the bench and the sofa. this is the kind of space efficiency that's needed when you don't have much room for furniture. the more reuse you can get out of each piece of furniture the better off you are and the more space you have to work with because you don't have to have separate furniture.
